BBS Wiki

Gilwell BBS was a Bulletin Board System in L'Aquila, Italy.

It opened in 1995, and immediately joined FidoNet, Global Scoutnet and many other networks.

Its Fidonet address was 2:335/610, while the Scoutnet address was 1907:395/101

Later it became fidonet Hub Coordinator for /600 and Global Coordinator for all of Scoutnet.

The software used was Maximus BBS, flanked by BinkleyTerm and QMail.

It pioneered the use of TransX to deliver Fidonet/Scoutnet traffic through email, cutting on international phone calls.

On April 6, 2009, at 3:32 local time, the town of L'Aquila was struck by an earthquake; the building housing the BBS was damaged (no victims, though) and power was lost. The BBS stopped operating a few minutes later, after the UPS failed, and was not reactivated.
